Important Things to Know About Robot Lawn Mowers: Questions People Ask
Before we dive into the list of the best mowers of 2022, here are a few things you should know about robot lawn mowers, all of which will help you better understand these products and ultimately make your choice. Here are some of the most common questions people ask about robot lawn mowers:What is an Autonomous Robot Lawn Mower?
As the name suggests, these are lawn mowers that work all by themselves. They require little to no human operation once they have been set up. In short, they completely free you from the responsibility of having to cut your lawn once every week or more, saving you time and who knows how many thousands of dollars (if you pay to have your lawn professionally cut, the savings can be immense)How Do Robot Lawn Mowers Work?
The next question people usually ask once they find out what robot lawn mowers are is “how do they work?” The answer to this depends on the model you are using. In recent years, robot lawn mowers have functioned using a boundary wire and built-in sensors. For this to work, a professional has to come to your property to install said wire, and then the mower communicates with it to know where it is on your property, plot its route, and also warn you if it’s been taken off the property, a key security feature. However, nowadays, more and more companies are coming out with robot lawn mowers that don’t need a boundary wire. Instead, they use maps, GPS, and advanced AI technology, usually involving cameras, to know where they are and also define the cutting area. This is becoming a very popular feature for robot lawn mowers largely because boundary wire installation is tricky to do on your own and expensive if you bring in a professional. But it is still somewhat new and unproven, though we expect this to become the norm in the future.Mobile Applications
Another key aspect of robot lawn mower functionality is its corresponding mobile app. Each company has its own, and you use this to do everything from set your mower up, establish your mowing preferences, such as length of cut and frequency of mowings, and track maintenance records. . You can also use these apps to track your mower’s progress at its mowing and, on some models, redirect it.Do Robot Lawn Mowers Work Well?
In a word: yes! Quality robot lawn mowers have razor sharp blades that cut your grass pretty much in the same way a regular mower does. In addition, the boundary wire technology they use has been around for some time (it’s basically the same as what a robot vacuum does inside your home, and those have been available for ages.) Apps have made them much easier to control and set up, and improved battery technology means they can run for longer. Also, all robot lawn mowers on the market today are fully waterproof, meaning they can sit outside no matter the weather. However, they all also come with rain sensors and will usually stop mowing, or delay starting, when it’s not dry. Wet grass is harder to cut and therefore consumes more battery than is necessary. It can also get stuck underneath the mower and make it less functional.Potential Robot Lawn Mower Shortcomings
If there’s one area where robot lawn mowers could be improved it’s in how much grass it can cut at one time. Because they run on rechargeable batteries, there is a limit to how much they can do in a single charge. The absolute top of the line models can cut about one acre at a time, but most are more in the .25-.5 acre range, which is fine for those living in urban areas but not great for those in more rural areas with more land. Another thing to keep in mind is that robot lawn mowers don’t always cut using back and forth patterns like landscapers do. The reason for this is that robot mowers use algorithms to determine the most efficient mowing pattern, a feature that helps optimize battery performance. This means they don’t leave your lawn with that pristine look you might be used to, but they also cut your grass more often so that your lawn always looks mowed, which is a nice compensation. How Much Do Robot Lawn Mowers Cost?
As you might expect, there’s a big range here. The cheapest robot lawn mowers cost around $700/$800, whereas the most expensive can run you more than $3,000. On average, expect to pay around $1,500 for a robot lawn mower. While this might sound expensive, it pales in comparison to the cost of paying for professional mowing services, which can cost you thousands of dollars per year. And as compared to traditional gas-powered mowers, larger ride-on models will cost you just as much. Smaller, push models are often cheaper, but they require frequent maintenance (blade sharpening, oil changes, spark plug changes) and also run on gas, which we all know isn’t getting any cheaper.Which Brands Make Robot Lawn Mowers?
A number of different companies make robot lawn mowers. The leaders include Husqvarna, WORX, Stihl, Robomow, MoRow, Honda, and Gardenia. How Do You Protect Robot Lawn Mowers from Theft?
Given how small and compact they are, you might be worried that someone would walk off with your $1,000+ device. But nearly all robot lawn mowers come equipped with anti-theft systems that will alert you when they’ve been taken off your property, which they can do thanks to the boundary wires they normally depend on.The Best Robot Lawn Mowers of 2022
Now it’s time to take a look at the best robot lawn mowers available in 2022. Our list covers a few different categories so that you can find the ideal mower for you no matter your needs.WORX Landroid M WR147 — Best Overall Lawn Mower
Formerly known as the WORX Landroid M WR14 or WR140, the newer WR147 model is our pick for the best overall robot lawnmower you can buy in 2022. Depending on which one you get, it will mow up to either ¼ or ½ acre, which is on the higher end of the scale in comparison to other robot lawn mowers.
Another thing we really like about this mower is its rugged build. It can easily handle bangs and bumps, as well as tree roots, which are all things your mower is going to encounter during its lifetime.
It’s also right in the middle of the road in terms of price, which for us means that you get the most bang for your buck with this autonomous mower.
It’s also got a great, user-friendly mobile app. Check out our full review of the WORK Landroid M WR147 and also take a look at the latest price from Amazon.
Gardena Sileno — Best Lawn Mower for City Lawns
If you’ve got a smaller lawn and/or live in the city, the Gardena Sileno is going to be the choice for you. There are several different models, which can cut areas ranging from 2,400 – 8,100 sq. feet. For those who don’t know the conversion, 8,100 sq. feet is just over .2 acres, which is quite small. But for city lawns, it’s plenty.
What’s really nice about the Gardena models is that they are super silent, giving off just 54 dBs of sound, which is less than that of your average conversation between two people. Again, great for city dwellers who don’t want to wake their neighbors up with a noisy mower.
The Gardena Sileno also has some advanced navigation tools that help it move through small spaces, which is ideal for those with irregularly shaped lawns. And with most models costing less than $1,000, this is also one of the more affordable robot lawn mowers on the market.

MowRo RS24 — Best Cheap Lawn Mower
If you want a robot lawn mower but don’t want to spend a lot of money, the MowRo RS 24 is going to be the robot lawn mower for you. In this case, spending less doesn’t mean getting lesser quality. The MowRo has it all where it counts: blade size and sharpness, battery power, rain sensing, full automation.
It also does surprisingly well on slopes. Better than many of the more expensive models with which it competes.
However, it does lack a few of the other features you might find on more advanced models, such as GPS for more precise navigation, and the build quality is not the same as with other models. But if you can take care of it and just want something that will reliably cut your grass, look no further than the MoRow RS24. Check for the latest price on Amazon.
Husqvarna 115h — Best Mower for Medium Sized Lawns
One of the most trusted names in lawn care equipment is Husqvarna, so it should come as no surprise that they also make one of the best robot lawn mowers on the market.
It can cut up to ½ acre, which is more area than most other mowers can do, though not the most. But what sets the Husqvarna apart from the competition is its navigation abilities. By using its patented guide wire technology, it can map a more efficient route around your lawn and mow the entire area without leaving marks.
The standard model operates on Bluetooth, but you can also upgrade to a 4G model that will communicate more effectively with the app and the mower’s base, leading to better performance overall.
Being a Husqvarna, this mower is also built like a tank. But this also brings a slightly higher price tag. Check out our full review or head over to Amazon for the latest price and ordering.
Also feel free to check out other Husqvarna models, such as the 435x or the 450x, which are larger, more durable machines that would have made it onto this list if it weren’t for their heftier price tags. But those with larger lawns featuring more difficult terrain might find these models worth the extra money.
Robomow RS630 — Best Cutting Lawn Mower
If you’re one of those people who is super picky about how your lawn gets cut, then you might be hesitant to make the switch over to a robot lawn mower. But if you get the chance to see how the Robowmow RS630 cuts, then you won’t want to wait another day.
Using dual floating deck blades, this robot lawn mower delivers the most precise cut of any other robot lawn mower out there. And thanks to the app, you can fully customize how it cuts, leaving your lawn looking exactly the way you want it to.
The only downsides are that it has a relatively small battery, which means it can only cut so much of your lawn at once. And it’s also on the pricier side. But if performance is what you want, the Robowmow RS630 is the way to go.

Segway Navimow — Best New Robot Lawn Mower
Full disclosure: this mower has not yet hit the market. However, we’re so excited about it that we thought it was worth including on this list of the best robot lawn mowers in 2022.
First, it’s made by Segway, one of the leaders in autonomous tech. Using their expertise, they have come up with a device that doesn’t need a guide wire and can handle a much more complex area than pretty much any other mower on the market. It also comes equipped with a number of AI tools that help it make a better map of your lawn and operate more efficiently, which means it can cover more ground on a single charge.
Also, it emits just 54 dB of sound, which is less than any other mower, making it one of the quietest on the market. Though we haven’t had the chance to test this mower ourselves, those we’ve talked to in the industry are excited about the release of this mower.
